LITE kicks off the '09 Campaign for Literacy

LITE has a lot going on this month, and we're all very excited. Our class of 20+ graduate students has been working extremely hard to ensure another successful year of advocating literacy in West Alabama. Tuscaloosa County's number of illiterate residents is shockingly high at 23 percent. The numbers only gets worse outside and around the county line.

LITE will be stationed at the Ferguson Center on campus from 11 to 2, and plenty of fliers are up around campus reminding students to stop by. We'll keep you posted on what's going on, how many people are interested, and most of all, we'll report the responses we get when students find out how rampant illiteracy is around us. Sometimes it's hard to think about illiteracy surrounding a college town dedicated to higher education, but it's true. In fact, one out of four residents in Alabama is functionally illiterate.

But the task isn't impossible! We can make a significant difference by volunteering just ONE hour for ONE week. Students don't realize how simple, yet helpful this small time commitment can be in the life of someone struggling to read every day. We hope to reach as many students as we possibly can to spread the word about this preventable social ill. More data and updates to come!!
